Why do some vegetarians eat fish and chicken?

I always associated vegetarians as people who don't like to eat something that was once alive? The reason I ask is I am going to a wedding today and the meal is lamb (which I never eat and never will) and I've discovered the vegetarian dish is fish. I don't like fish either so I'm gonna be hungry ! Hmm a lunch of potatoes ! Just for the record I'm not vegetarian - I love a good steak or bacon butty but the bride of the wedding is veggy and obviously thinks fish isn't classed as a living thing. I just don't like lamb or fish - eeew

  1. Vegetarians can be separated in to mainly four types: Type 1) Semi vegetarians - These 'vegetarians' eat all types of foods in their diet - including meat. However these individuals limit the amount of animal products they consume. I would be considered a semi vegetarian. Type 2) Lacto vegetarian - Individuals in this group are a step up from the semi vegetarians. They avoid all animal products except for dairy products in their diet. Type 3) Lacto-ovo vegetarians - This type of vegetarian diet excludes all meat except for dairy and eggs. Not too different from the previous type. Type 4) Vegans - These are the 'hard-core" vegetarians who avoid all animal products in their diet, such as meats, dairy products, and eggs. The vegan diet rely on lentils, beans, soy products etc.. .
  2. Because they're fucking hypocrites.
  3. diff types of vegis. eg semi vegi only eats white meat i personally only eat white meat, no fish ever!!! i choose to not eat meat because of flavour
  4. because red meat is a killer.
  5. Coz they're stupid! They feel this need to be different but can't give up fried chicken and grilled fish!
  6. im vegatarian and i dont eat any meat nor fish or chicken,..i dont eat any animals !
  7. What about Milk and Egg. The Pseudo / socalled vegetarians consume milk and eat egg also. Even Rice ( some time it has worms inside ) Cheese - Milk Product Even Water - so many live items (not seen by bare eyes) Vegetarians......ha ha ha.......stupidity. Please note : A mother's breast milk......purely non-vegetarians.
  8. Because fish and chicken aren't fuzzy and cute.
  9. because there not really veggies, they just like the label.
  10. Because chicken is poultry and fish is protein! Niether are classed as meat!
  11. Meat is murder but lentils are genocide.
  12. .....................And why do none veggies eat salads lol :-) Chicken `is` a meat innit? and in some quarters fish is also a kind of meat........... Anyway, each to their own. The one thing that gets right up my back, is these so called veggies etc, trying to preach to me about the wrongs of eating meat, they don`t win, I simply and roughly tell them to **** off!
  13. There are different types of vegetarians - some are morally against the eating of meat/fish, therefore choose to eat no meat or fish. Other vegetarians dislike the taste/texture of meat so will not eat any meats but will try to eat fish to keep healthy, as there’s no moral grounding, why not. To me vegetarianism is a loose descriptive term - it is not a be all and end all, but a personal preference. However, I would not describe a vegetarian someone who will eat chicken – but rather someone who likes white meat!? Lastly it sounds like the wedding is not catering for vegetarian's at all, as a fish dish would not cater for all vegetarians (like myself!!) I would ask, once at the dinner table, one of the waiting staff if there is a vegetarian option - they will most probably make you something alternative. Enjoy the day!!
  14. Ok, if the so called vegetarians eat fish and chicken. Then they are not vegetarians. They don't eat anything that you would have to kill.
  15. As most vegetarians look as though a good feed would do them the world of good, I suspect that this is exactly what they're doing when they eat fish and chicken ---- and what else do they eat when they think nobody's looking.............?
  16. My daughter is a vegetarian who will eat both fish and white meat. I am a meat-eater that cannot bring myself to eat rabbit meat because I associate them with cuddly pets, so I hope that I have a bit of an insight here. I think that the 'fish' bit is quite simple. You don't go around stroking or cuddling a fish or prawn, do you? They are cold-blooded and are considered to not have feelings. The same is thought of vegetables, so actually causing any suffering doesn't come in to the equation. My daughter (and other vegetarians) tell me that they simply do not like the taste, texture or look of red meat on their plate. I also think that as a youngster, my daughter was just too lazy to chew meat, but that could have something to do with her not liking the texture. My daughter will not eat cheese that is not a vegetarian cheese but will eat chicken. My husbands niece will eat any cheese but won't touch chicken or fish! I love lamb but I do understand if you do not wish to eat it, we all have our personal tastes which have nothing to do with being vegetarian or otherwise. I would be very surprised if the caterers at the wedding reception couldn't do something a bit different for you to cater for your tastes and I am surprised that your tastes weren't catered for by the people that invited you. Just pop a bit of your favourite nut-roast or something in your pocket and pop it on to your plate. Don't make a big thing about it but tell your immediate table-mates what and why you are doing it. I am sure they will understand. By the way, vegetables are alive too! Enjoy and have a good time!

  18. Cause chickens and fish don't scream as loud as pigs and cows LOL
  19. Vegetarians dont eat fish or chicken. People who call themselves vegetarians that DO eat fish and chicken are calling themselves something they are not. Whoever put down that fish is a vegetarian dish is misinformed and you should really let them know. Frodo Baggins (a poster above) is also misinformed. Her daughter is no where near a vegetarian..just someone who does not eat red meat.
  20. They dont. Faux veggies do...
  21. A true vegetarian would not eat chicken or fish
  22. True vegans suffer from lack of protein.
  23. Some people associate meat eating as one who consumes red meat. And that is fine to cut some of the fat from your meal. True vegetarians will not eat anything from any live animal. fish., mammel. Fish is very good for you, so is chicken if prepared properly.
  24. People feel like they need a label to apply to themselves about every little detail of their life. Technically fish is not vegetarian. If people eat fish why call themselves vegetarian?
  25. i heard a vegan say i dont eat anything that has a beating heart.me eather i kill the thing first then i eat it as the bible call for a man to kill his food first .
  26. For the protein.
  27. i think the definetion of vegetarianism is not eating meat/fish/birds/or eggs...if the vegetarians eat eggs then they are ovo-vegetarians. It intrigues me too.
  28. No vegetarians eat fish or chicken. They only eat fruits, nuts and vegetables. The only possible answer I can give you is that they (vegetarians) make their dishes interesting by creating 'fish-like' or 'chicken-like' vegetable dishes. So, the next time when you attend an all-vegetarian food fair, please ask them about the 'meat-like' dishes made of.
  29. i eat fish to keep up my protein levels, but i want to stop eating fish. it's just that my mom won't let me.
  30. there are different types of vegetarians Total Vegetarians eat only plant food. They do not eat any animal foods, including fish, eggs, dairy products, and honey. Vegans not only omit all animal products from their diets, but they also eliminate them from the rest of their life. Vegans use nothing from animals, such as leather, wool, and silk. Lacto-Vegetarians will include dairy products into their diet of plant food. Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarians eat both eggs and dairy products. Pesco-Vegetarians include fish into their diets. Pollo-Vegetarians eat poultry, such as chicken, turkey, and duck.
  31. I get kinda irritated with the amout of people who claim to be vegetarian and then say "Oh I just love fish." It makes them look really silly. A vegetarian is somebody who does not eat ANY meat - fish or chicken included.. it's as simple as that. People who claim to be vegetarian but still eat those things are simply misguided. You are NOT a vegetarian, not by any stretch of the imagination. Sorry to break the news to ya. ;-) http://www.vegsoc.org/info/definitions.html
  32. http://www.all-creatures.org/articles/ar-aninsidelook.html Vegetarians, as a whole, do not eat red meat. Some also choose to exclude poultry (pollo-veg) and/or seafood (pesco-veg). Because chicken and fish are indeed meat, it's debatable whether most would call it vegetarianism, but they are accepted forms. Many veg's, in additon to actual flesh, eliminate non-meat animal products like gelatin and caesin. It varies a lot, though. Drop all meat, but eat eggs and dairy, you're "lacto-ovo-vegetarian" Drop all dairy products, and eat eggs, you're "ovo-vegetarian" Drop eggs in all forms, but consume dairy, you're "lacto-vegetarian" No eggs OR dairy, plus, no non-meat animal products, including honey, and you're, by definition, "vegan". Go even further, and eat only plants and plant products (nothing grown with bacteria), and you're "macrobiotic" *please note, some macrobiotics DO eat meat. There's more to the philosophy than being non-meat-eaters. So, it's not technically a form of vegetarianism* Vow not to cook your food, or do anything but pick and eat, and you're "raw-vegan", "raw-macrobiotic", or just "raw". SO, to answer your question, there are, in fact, EIGHT forms af vegetarianism. (macro's don't count) pollo, pesco, pollo-pesco, ovo, lacto, lacto-ovo, vegan, and raw. 33. They don't. Vegetarians do not eat of any flesh. There are some who call themselves 'Vegetarian' who DO eat fish & fowl, but they are not actually vegetarian, anymore than I am a Rastafarian because I have Bob Marley, Eek-A-Mouse and Black Uhuru CD's. But I do know that whole 'veggie dish-fish' scenario. My brother's 1st wedding - with me as best man - had the catering company give me my plate for the sit-down meal - a circle of carrot sticks with some limp lettuce and a slice of tomato. Brilliant thinking!
  34. well vegetarians obviously eat things that were once alive! otherwise they couldn't eat vegetables. Vegetarians don't eat meats, although I have heard of people that eat fish and call themselves vegetarian. I have never heard of a person claiming to be vegetarian and eating chicken, but who knows?
  35. Because most vegetarians are confused people and they really can't tell you why they select one meat over another and still call themselves vegetarians.
  36. theyre not a vegetarian then..
  37. The caterer at your wedding probably doesn't realise that most vegetarians don't eat fish either. It's the caterer's ignorance, not what a real vegetarian would choose. A lot of people start out this way, cutting red meat out gradually and then eliminating chicken and fish. Some go on to become vegans (no animal products at all, not even honey), others continue to consume milk and eggs because they consider them things animals can give us without suffering. In this particular case, tho, it's the caterer who got it wrong.
