Should vegetarians be able to wear leather shoes?

I am a vegetarian and i own nothing leather, but my mom is trying to convince me to wear some leather. Its is very difficult where i live to find non-leather shoes, but i want to stay loyal to my animal friends. What is the right thing to do and what are some other things that vegetarians can and cant do?

  1. It depends on how 'Vegetarian' you are. Nobody can make you not wear leather. However, don't feel so bad about it.
  2. no
  3. There is no "Vegetarian Law." You do what you think is ethical and live by your own morals. Personally, I don't eat meat...not because I think it's wrong to eat meat, but because I can't stand the conditions the animals live in, and how they are slaughtered. I consider it more of a life-time boycott of the industry. So, I would certainly wear leather if it was something that I found in a thrift shop or something. I wouldn't put my wallet behind supporting the industry or the byproducts of the industry...but I also believe that if that animal died regardless...I would rather see that all of it is used than just to have it go through that torture only to be thrown away. Anyway...you decide what you think is right. It doesn't matter what I think or what any of these posters think. Consider all opinions, sure, but the bottom line is that you should be able to live with yourself.
  4. Yeah, they should...Vegetarians don't eat meat, Vegans don't use any animal products. If you're a Vegan you shouldn't wear leather, but if you're a Vegetarian then it's ok.
  5. It depends on what you think. They're still killing animals for the leather. Though I admit I have worn leather quite a few times since becoming a pescetarian. I wouldn't feel horrible about it, but if there is another option to wearing something that is made out of leather then I would choose the other option. If it is unavoidable, not your choice or anything, well, then there isn't any other option is there?
  6. Vegetarians made the choice to be vegetarian and can therefore choose to live that decision out in any way they see fit. Leather shoes are a more practical option, are more eco-friendly than synthetics and will last much longer, enabling you to have them longer and get more use out of them.
  7. that's a personal choice
  8. Yes they should, but it depends on how vegetarian you are,but also there is aing vegetaranism too far. The definition of a vegetarian is someone who does not eat any ddea animal products, so there is no reason why not that you can not wear leather shoes. I am a vegetarian and i wear leather shoes, because i am not eating the leather. But its all up to the individual.
  9. well, there are loads of non leather shoes, you just have to look. also you should follow your beliefs, there is no veggie mafia that will imprision you. you got to do thats best for your beliefs.
  10. If you're comfortable wearing leather shoes, wear them. I wouldn't wear them, but that's my choice. I'm lucky that a local shop sells a good range of synthetic shoes, and there's plenty on eBay too if you're able to buy from there. If you do decide to buy leather shoes, try to avoid Italian leather footwear. They source the leather in India and the cows are treated horrifically before and during slaughter.
  11. Should vegetarians be able to wear leather shoes? Yes, though some choose not to. Vegetarianism is a diet. I don't think any vegetarians eat leather shoes.
  12. I definitely avoid leather and I'm vegetarian... I have absolutely no desire to wear it. However, some vegetarians may only be interested in vegetarianism for health benefits... so I guess they would do whatever they want with leather, fur, etc. but personally no way for me. All of my shoes say "manmade material". The leather industry is bad for the environment.
  13. nope.
  14. no one can answer that question for you. if you can wear leather and not feel guilty, then that's your decision. it's really between you and the cow whose skin you would be wearing, not between you and all the vegetarians in the world. if you're really committed to stopping the use and abuse of animals, i think you already know the answer to your question.
