Why do the prices of fresh vegetables fall when they are in season?

Public Comments

  1. because the shipping costs are alot lower
  2. Supply and demand like anything else. When it's harvest time, there is an abundance of those fruits or vegetables. The farmers need to sell them or they'll go off. Same for the supermarkets. Since there is so much, the price is lower. When they are not in season, the supply is less so they charge more. Also, fruits and vegetables grown in season are grown outside by nature where as out of season they're grown indoors and often need more water and supplemented lighting and heat. All of that costs money so the price of the vegetable is higher than one grown outside by sun, rain and dirt.
  3. There are more of them. More of anything means it has less value. The rarer something is, the more valuable it tends to be. If a fresh food is out of season, a retailer has to find stock from farther away, which means the costs (transportation etc.)are a lot higher...so they have to charge more.
  4. Because when more are available the price comes down. When there are fewer amounts of an item, the prices goes up. It is one of the basics of economics. The Law of Supply and Demand.
  5. coz there're lots of vegetables in the market. overstock means decline nobody want another vegetables when they have a lot already. this is why prices fall when they're in season.
