Fresh Vegetable Recipes

Are you exasperated with the amount of so called fresh vegetables?

you have to throw away. Despite buying all my veg and salads loose instead of prepacked it does not last any longer than three days. I'm can't wait to get my veg garden up and running again this year. I have just finished off the last of the leeks out of th e garden so much tastier than shop bought. How about you..do you have vegetable garden?

  1. Surely you don't throw them in the rubbish bin. They go on the compost heap to help your garden.
  2. We grow potatoes carrots sprouts tomatoes onions shallotts strawberries cucumbers peppers and a variety of herbs
  3. I rarely throw food away. I shop often and buy what I need and can eat before it goes bad because I hate to throw it away. I live in an apartment, so no, I don't grow vegetables. In the summer I visit farmers markets and eat their produce. Shopping is more fun than gardening anyway. :-)
  4. i'd love to have a vegetable garden...it also provides some weekend activities rather than the usual TV plus the fresh and tasty vegetables. the veg from the supermarkets are so tasteless and even if they are organic-still do not taste like too well.
  5. I don't have a garden
  6. Started growing my own vegetables two years ago and haven't looked back. It is good to eat vegetables in their right season - if I grow them, I don't mind eating the same vegetable day in and day out until their season is over. Also, I never ate parsley until I started to grow it. I also exchange veggies with friends, they grow onions I grow broccoli, so we exchange. Will never buy another veggie from the shop again
  7. I totally agree with you. It's very frustrating, especially since decent fresh fruit and veg prices are rising ever higher in the UK (I have no idea why. I do notice these little things.). I live in a flat with no garden, but I have bought some garden tools, and next payday I am going to buy some whopping great pots and create a container kitchen garden! I over the year I plan on planting a variety of herbs, tomatoes, carrots, beans, strawberries and sunflowers (I know! Not fruit or veg but still pretty!) and I'll have a go at a capsicum plant as well. Hurray for self-sufficiency!
  8. I prefer to buy frozen vegetables with the exception of salad ones like lettuce and celery which I usually have to eat about a day within getting them before they go off. Supermarkets shouldn't even call their products 'fresh' food if they go off that quickly. Don't have a vegetable garden but do have 1 pear and 2 apple trees (cooking and normal) so lots of free fruit in the summer!
  9. Yes a little potatoes and peas growing in mine and I'm going to plant some carrots .xxx
  10. I would love to have a vegetable garden but have to settle for Tesco's version of "fresh" fruit and vegetables. I hate their tomatoes in particular as they are so bland and taste of nothing. I can't even enjoy vegetables that are in season, they are just awful. I want to grow my own food someday, I think it would be a great thing to see my own food sprouting up from the ground and know that the quality is far superior to anything shop bought. I also think it would be a great thing for children. If they could help to grow it, they might have a better appreciation and understanding of food, where it comes from and how it truly tastes. Good luck with your garden. :-)
  11. You are so right! I've bought mushrooms and tomatoes that are supposedly fresh and have had to chuck them after 2 days!! I would love to have a veg garden but do not have the time. I usually plant tomato, cucumber, carrot, sweetcorn and herbs but have never had a decent crop as they need so much looking after but they last a lot longer and taste much better than shop bought stuff!
  12. Yes i grow my own, Peas, runner beans,Tomatoes, cues courgettes, marrows peppers, this year i am growing Jerusalem artichokes, and baby carrots my space is quite limited, i also do a few lines of spring onions, radish, and lettuce, if space permits.Your right i think when you grow your own things they do taste better, plus you know what you have put on them too.
  13. instead of buying flimsy lettuce, you should buy heartier vegetables, like eggplant, cucumber, zucchini, tomatoes, choy sum, etc. that way, instead of letting your vegetables wilt, you can make a hearty vegetable soup or something.
