agriculture: How come we have fresh vegetables all year round?

location: western europe. Are we really having fresh vegetables (freshly harvested) vegetables all year round? Do they come from greenhouses or are they imported from countries with a milder climate? Or are they actually not fresh and do they come from freezers? Is there any vegetable that is harvested in the winter? Please be as specifik as possible. Thanks. ps. yahoo-answers people, under what category would i put an agricultural question?

  1. if you live in an area that has winter I'd try to look into growing vegetables indoors, like with plants you'd have to keep them sunlit and watered. if your lucky enough to never know the assbite of winter start with a small garden you won't get frustrated with and grow your favorites. Vin
  2. flash freezing, as well as the increase in the globalization of agriculture (i.e. Brazil). The globalization and flash freezing has allowed for continuace growing cycles of seasonal fruit/veggies, and the flash freezing has also increased the availability of seasonal fruits by preserving them and allowing for more distant shipping. Also a good point that greenhouses have increased, as welll as the development of hydroponics and farming techniques using limited resources but producing higher yields.
