Does anyone know about Vegetarian food in Ukraine? Since I consider a job in Kiev, Ukraine, I would like to know if anyone know about the availability of Vegetarian food in Ukrainian restaurants and supermarkets, or maybe in health food stores. I heard it is more difficult to find Vegetarian food in Eastern European countries then in e.g. the UK.
Health food stores? Does anyone know how I could find some health food/vegetarian stores in Nova Scotia, Canada? Thanks!
What's a good vegetarian dog food for my Great Dane? Please don't tell me that dogs have to eat meat. I want to hear from other people who feed their dogs vegetarian dog food. My great dane currently has diarrhea and flatulence issues. I think that a vegetarian dog food will greatly improve his health, especially to omit all of the animal "by-products". I also do not want to contribute to the meat industry anyways (I'm vegan). Thanks for your advice and experience. Obviously I am aware of the fact that the dog needs protein. However, protein does not have to come from other animals. FYI, I would never subject my dog to an unhealthy situation and would only want the best for him. In my opinion, animal by-products (which are parts of the animal not used for human consumption) are not nutritionally "complete" as you see to say. If it's not good enough for humans, than it's not good enough for my dog either. Would you eat the crap they put into dog food? Hell no.
Is organic food really good for your health? I'm not a strict vegetarian or health conscious person. But thesedays, if there were organic products and regular products, I'd choose to buy organic products believing its gonna do something good for my health. Are there any real difference in organic food and others? Like let's say I have this organic pasta. How good is it for me than eating regular pasta?
Why are so many vegetarian foods loaded with sodium? I have decided to give vegetarianism a try for the apparent health benefits, but whenever I go to the local health food stores, I'm amazed at how much sodium many vegetarian and vegan products contain. I saw a package of vegan cheese yesterday that had 990mg of sodium per serving. With my high blood pressure, that one slice of cheese has exceeded my sodium intake for the entire day. I can understand common commercial foods having so much salt, but I thought vegetarians would be a little more concerned about such things.
vegetarian party food? My son will be two next month. I'm going to have a small party, just family. All adults except there will be 2 other kids (aged 3 & 8). I was going to provide cake and snack foods/light meals in a park. Apart from my son, mother & me, they are all meat eaters. What are some tasty vegetarian snack foods (health) and meals I could provide? Thanks
I want to switch to vegetarian food? I've been trying for the past 1 year but every now and then theres that yum fish dish or fried chicken treat that makes me backtrack. How do I motivate myself? I'm only doing it for health reasons. Oh and which veg food can substitute omega3 fatty acids in fish?
if i were to open a vegetarian/health style restaurant in STL would anyone come? i have several friends that are vegetarians and they complain that there are not enough veg options. i am not a vegetarian but enjoy all styles of food and like to eat healthy when i can. i know enough about all kinds of food to make a great menu. would people eat at this kind of place or is st louis just a meaty kind of town? it would be in the south grand or grove neighborhood. the main squeeze was kind of the model i was working toward. thats a college town though. maybe a little more progressive
Does spicy Korean food have ANY health benefits? I'm Korean, so I eat spicy Korean food basically everyday. Does eating spicy Korean food, or Korean food in general, have any health benefits at all? I'm also a vegetarian, so all of the dishes I eat are meat and dairy free. *This is a serious question, so please don't leave any rude or useless remarks!
I want to start my own business... Health food store? Hello! I would really like to start my own business. I would want it to be a healh food store.... like a whole foods store since there isn't anything with like that within 75 miles of where I live. I am Vegetarian and I am sick of not being able to find any of the products that I like in the area! Any suggestions on how to go about this? How hard will it be? Where would I get the products and food that I need to stock the shelves? Any suggestions?
Easy vegetarian foods for camping trips? My family and I have made plans to go and a camping trip in the near future, and I am having a hard time thinking of foods that I can bring along that will fit my friends and my vegetarian diet. My parents can be pretty cheap, so most likely they won't buy anything from the health food store (bummer, I was hoping for geletin free marshmellows).
why people eat animal food, even after knowing that it is not good for health? do we have the right to kill? the health research all over the globe says emphatically that vegetarian food is not only good for human body and also gives long life. But I find people preferring nonvegetarian foods. When we can not create life can we kill life. plant is also life. But it is very low form of life. We kill the goat because it is less evolved than us. look into its eyes and observe & realise the innocent looks. How can we kill our own brother and sister in the form of cow, pig, sheep or goat whatever. I fail to understand why animal lovers tolerate this massive massacre of the innocent animals just ot fill the ruthless human bellies. I see some people who love the dog kill a pig and give the flesh to the pet dog. it is justified to kill one animal to satisfy another animal or man.If one visits the slaugher house and observes how the animals cry when they are butchered, go to sea shore and see how the fish wriggles before it dies, I bet they can never their dead bodies. cut you body before u cut others
How does a long time meat eater become a vegetarian? How does one motivates oneself to become a vegetarian? What are the health benefits to become a vegetarian? What are the best supermarket (in Canada) to buy vegetarian food and ingredients? What is the vegetarian lifestyle? What are the activities, sports that compliment a vegetarian lifestyle? Is there a vegetarian culture? (Please answer vegetarian only)
Anyone interested in vegetarian food who isn't a vegetarian? It seems like on this forum everyone is a die hard vegetarian/vegan, or some meat eater trolling. I do eat meat but lately have cut down on the consumption of meat greatly and the majority of my meals are vegetarian. Is anyone else like that? you aren't willing to go 100% vegetarian but the majority of your meals are vegetarian? For me its 100% health reasons, and not about the animals.
I'm trying to save money on food (vegetarian college student)-care to help? I am a vegetarian college student, and I live in an off-campus apt, so I buy all of my food from the grocery store. If I had enormous sums of cash, I would live off of fresh organic produce & health store food. Unfortunately, that gets to be expensive after a while, so I need to be a bit more creative. As far as my dietary preferences, I don't really like tofu, tempeh, or "fake meats" that much. However, I do like beans, legumes, whole grains (esp. oatmeal), all fruits, all veggies, lite soy milk, edamame, peanut butter, starbucks, chocolate, cake, ice cream, cookies.... I try to keep my daily calories between 1200-1500 each day. I also try not to go overboard on the sodium. Thanks so much for the advice!! 10 pts to the best plan!!
I am a super picky vegetarian and I'm moving to China-would appreciate some advice on food...? I am really picky about food, food health codes, etc (my friends call me a freak and sadly, I agree). Anyway, here in the States, I can make do, but I'm going to lose about 80% of my food options in China. What are good sources of calcium besides milk, yogart, and cheese? (I'm borderline Vegan) and other sources of protein (other than meat, nuts, and beans). I've been researching on the internet and the options I'm usually given-I don't eat.
Vegetarian food? I'm a vegetarian and have a really hard time finding food with protien that still tastes good. I am still growing, and I don't want to end up in bad health. Also, I think I eat too many carbs. My mom gets upset with me becasue she makes a special meal for me and I usually don't like it. So any suggestions need to be easy to make. What can I get at my cafeteria other than pizza (I know that isn't very good for anybody!) Thank you!
why people think vegetarian diet good for your health? people who come from india and eat only vegetarian food have problem in their late age with walking, or have bone problem. even in their younger age their skin get saggy, and have visible fat underneath. also most of them have eye problem. i think vegetarian diet make people physically weak, Japanese people start to eat meat for the same reason. they use to be vegetarian by religion. but religion is a different thing. lets leave this out. why some people want to push you to be vegetarian, why they think to eat only vegies is good for your health? i eat lots of veggies!! and i know veggies are healthy the question is why people think eat only veggies is better then a balanced diet. sorry for not be specific.
What are some health reasons to go vegetarian? I would like some in depth answers. I hear a lot about the food industry, so can you tell me about that too? I am kind of creeped out now because I don't really know what's in the food I eat, and everyone in my house always buys McDonald's for me. I get stomach aches a lot and the food is gross.. Would you suggest I eat fish instead, or cut that out?
Need help with a vegetarian project? Hey everyone! I need help with a vegetarian project I'm doing for my health class. I'm gonna do a powerpoint presentation and need atleast 7 slides. I have 5 slides right now. the - intro - what are vegetarians - why people become vegetarians - foods vegetarians eat - health benefits of a vegetarian and I need like 2 more... can you guys give me some ideas on what I can add on those two last slides I need to add? Thanks!
Going Vegan or Vegetarian? Can anybody give me tips on going from a regular omnivorous diet to a vegan or vegetarian diet? I live with my grandma who loves to cook eggs/ham/bacon/any kind of meat quite often, and I have a metabolism problem that makes it very difficult for me to digest protein. There are no health food stores around my area, and the health food section in my local stores are very small/almost non-existent. Most of what I eat right now are carbs (such as breads, cereal, oatmeal), protein (which I shouldn't), and fats.) I need to find an inexpensive way to incorporate more fruits and veggies into my diet, but I don't know how I can... any suggestions? What do you usually shop for when you look for vegan or vegetarian foods? I'm just going on the diet type thing to stop myself from eating so much protein, and see how I feel after I begin the diet... . Also, do you think I would gain or lose weight on this diet/lifestyle change? Would this be a major problem at a college campus where they usually serve mostly protein? They do have vegitarian choices... a salad bar and a bowl of fruit, thats it.. Back in my dorm room, I'd have a mini-fridge, and not much money.... Edit: I can't have alot of protein, maybe a spoonful of peanut butter a day is good enough for me because of the metabolism issue I have. (i can't digest an amino acid in that protein) I don't have any issue with the way chickens/cows/pigs or whatever are being treated.
Does anyone have a recipe for vegetarian mushroom pate please? Years ago, as an change from sandwiches for lunch, I use to pop down to the health food store and buy some biscuits and a pot of vegetarian mushroom pate. The pate was delicious, and I'd like to make some, so if anyone has a simple recipe I'd be very grateful. Thankyou.

What nutritional supplements should a new vegetarian get used to buying? I have been a vegetarian now for 7 months, but I still don't feel like I properly know how to nourish my body nutritionally. I eat a great variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, oats, legumes and nuts, but Is that enough? I also take flaxseed oil for my omega. I am starting to shop at health food stores now but I am not really sure what is best for me to buy. Are there any products you can recommend me to buy?
Can a teenager who only eats the meat his/her parents make them eat, be considered vegetarian? Based on what I have read, vegetarianism/veganism is NOT a diet but a lifestyle choice based on respect for animals. That if one abstains from meat for health reasons, but would eat it if it was not for the fat and cholesterol then they are not a vegetarian, but one who eats a vegetarian diet. Likewise if some one is too poor to purchase meats, but would gladly do so if they had the money (this is true for many in the third world) then they are not a vegetarian. If we accept the above is true would it also be fair to say that when a vegetarian claims her toddler son is a vegan/vegetarian, then her statement is equally false? If a four year old is only given vegetarian food, the child has not made a choice. He can only become a vegetarian upon being offered meat and deciding not to eat it. Agree, disagree? Every so often someone will post a hypothetical directed to vegetarians of the sort, if you were in a shipwreck and floating in a life raft and your only possible source of food was fish, would you eat the fish or starve? Universally people respond that yes, they would eat the fish instead of starve to death, but that the hypo has little bearing on their day to day decision to abstain from meat. But let’s assume such a situation did occur to someone who had become a vegetarian 10 years prior. And the vegetarian eat the fish, and then upon being rescued four weeks later resumed his abstention from meat. Ten years after that he tells someone he has been a vegetarian continuously for 20 years. Is he lying? Did he remain a vegetarian during the shipwrecked period or did he cease to be one? The shipwreck hypo is truly a rare event. The next hypo is not. Assume a 13-year old girl wants to be a vegetarian, in fact she would prefer to be vegan. Her parents, however, strongly oppose such action. So she eats the least amount of meat possible in her situation. At dinner she takes the smallest piece of chicken that is in the bowl and then loads up on steamed veggies. She gets away with this because none of her sibling mind having less steamed veggies. When dinners is spaghetti and meatballs, she tries to get as much spaghetti and as little meatballs as possible. She has asked her mom if she can make her own lunches for school and mom has said no. So when she gets a ham and cheese sandwich for lunch she trades it with a friend for a PBJ one. At restaurants she always orders something veggy. When it is her choice she chooses veggy, but being 13 it is not always her choice. Assuming you are okay with our fishing eating shipwreck survivor claiming he has been a vegetarian for twenty years, would it not also be fair to call this teenage girl who does not eat meat unless her parents make her also a vegetarian? Kitkat - I would say that a 4 year-old who eats meat and veggys is an omnivore, a 4 year old child who is fed only veggy is a herbivore, but not a vegetarian.
What are some vegetarian necessities? I am starting to eat less and less meat and hopefully becoming a vegetarian and I was wondering what are some brands of foods that I should buy, maybe some recipe ideas? Maybe some that are available at Dierburgs so I don't always have to go to health food stores I know boca for example...but thats it! I should not have used the term "brand" I simply mean good vegetarian products
Vegetarian quick and easy food/pantry ideas? I am a newly veggie college student w/ a full time office gig-not a lot of time to cook and I am EXTREMELY health consciencs-try to keep my intake at 45% carbs 35% protein and 20% fat, what are some examples of pantry staples that I could load up on? I already LOVE amy's frozen entrees-ANY IDEAS?
Can you name some reasons to go vegetarian? ONE HUNDRED & ONE REASONS TO GO VEGETARIAN People Land Air Water Efficiency Animals Health PEOPLE Every year in the UK we feed our livestock enough food to feed 250,000,000 people while in the world 30,000,000 people die of starvation 20 vegetarians can live off the land required by one meat eater Every 3 seconds a child dies of starvation somewhere in the world If Americans reduced their meat consumption by 10% it would free 12,000,000 tons of grain - enough to feed 60,000,000 people (the population of Great Britain) If all Americans became vegetarian, it would free enough grain to feed 600,000,000 people (the population of India) Intensification in animal farming has displaced 1,000,000's of people from their traditional lands - eg. indigenous people in south & central america, native americans in north america & crofters in Great Britain - this is continuing today People displaced from their lands into cities succumb to dietary deficiency, diseases, parasites & opportunistic diseases In third world countries 1 in 10 babies die before their first birthday The UK imports £46,000,000 worth of grain from third world countries to feed our livestock Due to overgrazing 850,000,000 people live on land threatened by desertification & over 230,000,000 already live on land so severely desertified that they are unable to sustain their existence & face imminent starvation 1,000,000,000 people in the west gorging on meat & dairy leave 1,000,000,000 to waste away & 3,500,000,000 teeter on the brink LAND If they continue to clear American forests to raise cattle at the present rate, in 50 years there will be none left 1 acre yields 165 lbs of beef or 20,000 lbs of potatoes 8/10 of cultivated land in the UK is used to grow food for animals (14,732,000 hectares) It takes 16lbs of high protein soya to produce 1 lb of beef Since 1945 in the UK we have lost 95% of flower meadows, 50% of ancient woodlands, 40% of heathlands, 50% of wet lands & 224,000 km of hedgerows all due to animal farming Pressure on land due to meat farming leads to soil erosion 6billion tons/year in the USA If everyone went vegetarian upto 90% of land used for animal farming could be taken out of production & used to replant woodlands, leisure activities etc. 25% of Central america's forests have been destroyed for cattle grazing since 1960 Between 1966-1983 38% of the Amazon rain forest was destroyed for cattle grazing 90% of cattle ranches established on cleared forest land go bankrupt in less than 8 years as the land becomes barren due to nutrient loss & overgrazing Overgrazing by cattle is destroying the land & increasing desertification, nearly 430 million acres in the USA alone has suffered a 25-50% reduction in yield since first grazed An inch of topsoil takes 200-1000 years to develop - yet in the USA they have lost around 1/3 of their prime topsoil in 200 years (around 7 inches) due to animal farming Land will be lost due to rises in sea level due to global warming due to animal farming AIR The destruction of the rainforest by cattle farmers is destroying the lungs of the planet & reducing the worlds capacity to replenish our oxygen supply The 1,300,000,000 cattle in the world emit 60,000,000 tons of methane per year (methane is a greenhouse gas & leads to global warming) Burning of forests, grasslands & agricultural waste associated with animal farming releases 50-100,000,000 tons of methane per year Combining these figures, 25% of methane emissions are due to animal farming (not including the billions of sheep, pigs & poultry so the real figure is much higher) Fertilizer used to grow crops to feed to animals releases nitrous oxide - thought to account for 6% of the greenhouse effect Fertilizer, weedkiller & pesticides sprayed on crops enter the atmosphere creating a noxious carcinogenic cocktail CFCs are released into the air from refrigeration units used to store decomposing flesh (meat), milk & butter - CFCs are destroy the ozone layer Ammonia from animal urine also pollutes the atmosphere CO2 is released by burning oil & petrol in lorries, ships, abattoirs, dairies, factories etc. associated with meat & dairy production Emissions from large chemical plants which produce fertilizer, weedkiller & other agricultural chemicals are also poisoning our air WATER 25 gallons of water to produce 1lb of wheat & 2500 gallons to produce 1lb of meat UK farm animals produce 200,000,000 tonnes of slurry (liquid excrement) every year, the majority of which ends up in our rivers Bloody waste water from abattoirs ends up in our rivers In the USA every second humans produce 12,000 lbs of effluent while farmed animals produce 250,000 lbs Nitrates & pesticides used on crops grown to feed livestock end up in our rivers Meat & dairy farming uses 70 litres of water per day per animal in the UK or 159,250,000,000 litres per year in total The water used to produce 10 lbs of steak is equivalent to the average consumption of water for an entire household for an entire year Depletion of groundwater reserves to grow crops for animals & to supply abattoirs will lead to greater water shortages Aquafers (stores of underground water) in the San Joaquin valley in the USA are being drained at the rate of 500,000,000,000 gallons/year to produce meat 18% of all agricultural land in the world is irrigated & as global warming increases (partly due to animal farming) it will cost $200,000,000 to keep these systems going The water used to produce a 1000 lb beef steer is enough to float a Destroyer battleship The liquid waste from the various parts of the meat & dairy industry flow into the rivers & from there into the seas polluting them & encouraging huge algal blooms to grow EFFICIENCY To produce 1calorie of energy from meat takes 60 calories of petrol, whereas growing grains & legumes to directly feed people produces 20 calories for each calorie of fuel used ( thats 1200 times more efficient) Meat & dairy farming uses billions of gallons of oil to run tractors, fuel ships & lorries (to move animal feed & animals), pump billions of gallons of water to irrigate fields & run slaughterhouses, power refrigeration units to prevent the corpses from decomposing & to power sewage plants to clean up some of the pollution produced Cattle convert only 6% of their energy intake (mainly grains & soya) into flesh, the remaining 94% is wasted as heat, movement (which is why they keep many animals in very close confinement), hair, bones, faeces etc 1lb of beef takes 1 gallon of petrol to produce A family of four eating beef for a year uses enough petrol to run a car for 6 months (obviously depending on how far you drive!) If the full ecological cost of meat was passed onto the consumer - the price would be quadrupled (at least) The EC spends œ100,000,000's to subsidise animal production resulting in lakes of unwanted milk & mountains of unwanted meat & butter. This money could be better spent encouraging organic fruit, vegetable & grain production In the USA in 1979 145,000,000 tons of crops were fed to cattle resulting in only 21million tons of animal bodies - the cost of the wasted crops was $20,000,000,000 Between 1950 & 1985 grain production in Europe & the USA increased massively but 2/3 was fed to animals 70% of all grain is fed to animals Eating vast quantities of animal flesh, eggs, milk & butter is a luxury that most of the planet can not afford ANIMALS Fishing with drift (and other modern) nets weakens & destroys ecosystems by indiscriminately killing billions of sea creatures & disrupting the sea bed Fishermen's nets kill 10 times as many other animals as the fish they are hoping to catch Fish caught in nets die an agonising slow death of suffocation Each year 15,000,000,000 land animals are slaughtered for food & an unknown but much larger number of sea creatures (including 1000's of dolphins caught accidentally) Chickens are crammed into battery cages with upto 3 other birds, they are unable to even spread their wings & many can not even stand up Unwanted male chicks (because they can't lay eggs) are gassed or pulped while their sisters go to the battery sheds Chicks are debeaked without anaesthetic to prevent them injuring each other in the unnaturally confined conditions they are kept in - this is equivalent to having your fingernails pulled out without anaesthetic Modern farming methods using growth hormones & artificial lighting mean that many chickens out grow their bones, resulting in fractured & broken legs Sows are kept tethered in stalls 1.3 x 1 metre on concrete or slatted floors - they can not even turn around Poultry raised for meat are kept in windowless broiler sheds, with around 20-30,000 in each shed, they live in an area of 10-20 cm square - fighting due to overcrowding is common & like battery hens they commonly suffer from supperating bed sores Broilersheds are artificially lit 23 hours a day to produce rapid growth Animals travel between farms & to slaughter in overcrowded transporters with no food or water - resulting in stress, injuries & deaths - legal requirements are widely ignored 95% of poultry suffer injuries before being killed & 30% suffer broken bones Problems with stunning practices mean that many animals have their throats slit while still conscious (around 6% of cattle or 200,000 per year) & are then dipped in tanks of scalding water (to loosen feathers, bristles etc.) again while fully conscious 4000 animals die spurting their blood out every minute in a British slaughterhouse Calf leather comes from animals killed at just 2 weeks old Cows were fed on the ground up remains of other cows & sheep - the result is thought to be BSE (mad cow disease) in the USA cattle are fed partly on recycled plastic pellets Cows only give milk for 10 months after they have a calf - so they are routinely artificially inseminated (ie. mechanically raped) to keep them pregnant & milking - their calves are taken away (usually at 12 hours old) for meat or export to veal crates Cows would naturally live upto 20 years but are slaughtered after 5-7 years when their milk production begins to fall In the UK animals are killed by first being stunned with electricity or a captive bolt gun (ie. a bolt is fired into their heads) before having their throats slit & being plunged into boiling water - all this happens on a production line with the animals being hung upside down from a moving conveyor belt - this is factory farming "Animals are those unfortunate slaves & victims of the most brutal part of mankind" - John Stewart Mill (philosopher) Veal calves are confined in stalls in the dark, unable to move & are fed on pigs blood , chocolate & dried milk (we are drinking the rich fresh milk of their mothers) Cows naturally produce 5 litres of milk per day for their calves - under the intensified systems of modern farming they produce 25-40 litres per day - resulting in swollen & inflamed udders - at this rate they are soon worn out Large areas of land are under monoculture to grow crops to feed to animals - these areas are wildlife deserts supporting fewer & fewer species. HEALTH Vegetarians have a 20% lower rate of mortality from all causes (ie. they live longer & don't get sick as often) Meat is full of traces of antibiotics, hormones, toxins produced by stress & pesticide residues that become concentrated from all the crops they have eaten Fish contain heavy metals & other pollutants -many of which originated on farms The world health organisation recommends a diet low in saturated fat, sugar, salt & with plenty of fibre - exactly what you get on a vegan/vegetarian diet Farmed animals contain upto 50% saturated fat in their bodies Vegetarians have 24% reduced risk of getting heart disease & Vegans a 57% reduction (heart disease is the biggest killer in the UK accounting for 50% of deaths) Obesity is rare in vegetarians, obesity is related to many diseases Vegans & vegetarians have lower blood pressure & cholesterol levels - high levels are associated with heart disease, strokes & kidney failure Vegetarians have a 50% reduced risk of dying of diabetes Vegetarians have a 40% reduced level of cancer than the general population thought to be because they have a higher intake of vitamins A,C & E Vegetarians have a reduced risk of developing gall & kidney stones 80% of food poisoning is due to infected meat (faeces, bacteria etc.) after all meat is decomposing flesh - most of the rest is due to salmonella in eggs Osteoporosis due to calcium loss from bones is mainly due to the sulphur content in meat & casein protein in milk that cause calcium to be lost in the urine - the countries with the highest meat & dairy consumption are those with the highest levels of brittle bones 50% of people do not have the enzyme to digest milk properly & milk allergy is related to asthma & eczema Meat eaters have double the rate of Alzheimers disease as Vegans & Vegetarians - some people also think that Parkinsons disease is also linked to meat eating Egg yolk is a dense concentration of saturated fat & the white is high in albumin protein associated with leaching calcium into your urine. Butter is 80% saturated fat, cream is 40% saturated fat & cheese is 25-40% saturated fat Meat eaters are two and a half times more likely to get bowel cancer than Vegetarians The cling film used to wrap meat in supermarkets & butchers contains chemicals linked to falling sperm counts in men Chinese people (living mainly on a vegetarian diet) consume 20% more calories than Americans but Americans are 20% fatter Of 2,100,000 deaths in the USA in 1987, 1,500,000 were related to diet (ie. meat & dairy) AND I COULD GO ON ! If you've read this far, I hope that you are beginning to see that the Meat & Dairy industry is a major contributor to misery on this planet. It is destroying the health of people in rich countries, starving those in poor countries, it is torturing & killing billions of animals every year and in the meantime it is one of the major factors in the destruction of the environment - so what does the meat & dairy industry have to say in it's defence? Well their only real point is usually "Meat is tasty" - fair enough a lot of people enjoy the taste of meat - but there are plenty of delicious alternatives (just consider the huge range of vegetarian dishes in Indian cooking - one of the oldest & most sophisticated cuisines in the world) and if you really crave meat & dairy, nowadays there are plenty of healthy non animal alternatives - just look in the supermarket & health food shop. So I hope you will agree it's pretty pathetic to consider all the evidence & then say "well I know you're right about the environment & health & the animals - but I just love my meat" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: ARC is @nti-copyright throughout - Copy and distribute any part as you wish. how can I become vegetarian? My intention is the eightfold path. the problem is my family is fine with being vegetarian except for my brother and my grandpa. Besides tofu, where else can I find a high source of protein, and any type of vitamin or anything that i need to function the same as eating meat? My family also sometimes goes out and eat. If I was to eat a buffet or a chinese or vietnamese restaraunt (what I normally go to) what things can I eat? First of all, I dont believe eating anything that imitates meat like morning stars. Im also used to chinese cooking but I currently prefer american. to clarify my question, What vegetarian foods have the same health benefits as meat besides eggs, milk...? also in the morning my grandpa makes sausage and eggs, which I hate the taste of anyways. what breakfasts can I eat? what home lunches? also in the morning my grandpa makes sausage and eggs, which I hate the taste of anyways. what breakfasts can I eat? what home lunches?
Why are there seemingly no vegetarian/vegan fast-food restaurants? This is such an obvious thing to me that should be happening. I don't get it. Such a place would only have positives, in my opinion: - Alternative ingredients - More people would be able to eat the food - As health-conscious as society is now, it would fit many of the requirements - It would open many people's minds to the fact that not eating meat doesn't mean eating grass - Less contamination of the food, I think - Kids would be encouraged to eat more fruits and vegetables, and try new things - Prices would most likely be a bit lower (if done correctly, the prices SHOULD be lower) - The food/service would be faster! Remove the meat, and meals don't take as long to prepare For every meat-based dish out there, there's a vegetarian/vegan substitute that tastes just as good, often the same. I know there are meatless sit-down restaurants, but why no drive-thru/fast food ones?
Is it better to be a vegetarian? I was faithful to a vegetarian diet for about a year, but then decided to go back to eating meat. Since then, I have had a few minor health concerns. I went to a health food store and talked to a naturopathic physician and was told that my ailments could actually have been caused by my being on a vegetarian diet. I'm not sure this makes sense to me. Does anyone else have any input? Thanks!
Is the flexarian diet replacing the vegetarian and vegan cult as far as eithics and health is concerned? Take a look at the following quotes . . . http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/165130_flexitarians17.html "Until last year, Natural Health, a Woodland Hills, Calif.-based magazine with a monthly circulation of 300,000, published only vegan recipes, which exclude even dairy and honey. Now the recipes regularly include meat, said Barb Harris, the magazine's editorial director. Even the strictest of vegetarian advocacy groups consider the flexitarian trend a good thing. Bruce Friedrich, spokesman for Norfolk, Va.-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals [PETA], said he doesn't see any harm in vegetarianism focusing more on food than the issues that spurred the movement. "From our perspective, if people influenced by health consequently cut back on fish and meat consumption, that helps animals," he said. "However, where the protein comes from in that diet, I don't feel it's wrong if you've got a great big plate of vegetables or your protein is from a healthy, happy chicken, or a grass-fed cow." SANDSTORM: I ddn't misinterpret the article, you are simply thinking rather shallowly. If there has been a paradigm shift, is that shift to flexarian diets supplanting vegetarianism and vegan cults activities. The articles are only indicative of a trend and I was asking a question as to the logical extension of that trend. Got it? Also, you are in a state of bizarre dillusion if you think that "subtle" actions of the vegetarians and vegan cult is the impetus for this change. No vegetarian culture evangelizes their diet and ethics like the US, UK and essentially Western Europeans. They think that is silly. Most people in our culture think, and rightly so, that such extremism is not worthy of note. So your supposed influence is quite imaginary. Y'all aren't that important. There are far more powerful and credible dynamics driving the change. ME: You need to read a bit more critically to understand the question. You answer doesn't even touch the margins of answering the question.
How is cod liver oil vegetarian? On the website for the health food store Holland & Barrett, in the vegetarian section there is 'cod liver oil capsules for vegetarians'. ??? COD LIVER? ??????
Is Non Vegetarian harmful to health? I heard that when an animal is killed it will emit some strange light posionous acids which cant be removed even by boiling. If this is true then will the non vegetarian foods do harm to our body?
Why is "Vegetarian & Vegan" in the Food & Drink section of YA? It seems it would fit better in the "Society & Culture"; or the "Health > Diet & Fitness, section." I'm just wondering what other's think. BUT! Vegetarianism is a life style not just a menu choice, correct? I'm a vegetarian, and I consider it a life style choice.
Im trying to be vegetarian, what do i sub. meat with? i already eat health but for better health i want to cut off my meat and eat more soy? any suggestions? my mom sais its expensive to be vegetarian and that we dont have health food places.so what is some cheap foods to?
Are Vegetarians healthier? Do they get less food poisoning etc? Are their teeth, skin, general health better? I have wondered about this for years now as I am sort of contemplating becoming a vegetarian. Is there anything unhealthy about it.eg. certain protein, mineral deficiencies? Do they get food poisoning, have health food scares etc.

Food suggestions for new vegetarian? I'm thinking about becoming a vegetarian. So that means no meat. What are some alternatives that are just as enjoyable? No salad or stuff like that, I'm not doing it for health reasons.(I'm doing it because of mistreatment of animals and all that stuff) I'm thinking about cutting out fish too, that's an animal. And they do the same stuff they do to fish as they do to other animals
Any advice for a newborn vegetarian? I just became a vegetarian 6 weeks ago and have been successful at not eating meat so far (except fish, I'll quit eating that later) but I keep eating things I didn't normally eat before like a lot of snack foods. I became a vegetarian to improve my health and it has worked so far, but I feel I've had a relapse due to my constant snacking to take the edge of the desire to eat meat. What would you suggest? Vegetarians only please.

What is the significance of being vegetarian in spirituality? Does our body suits to eat non vegetarian food? A fair look at the evidence shows that humans are optimized for eating exclusively plant foods, and not meat. Human anatomy: We're most similar to other herbivores, and drastically different from carnivores. Longevity & health: The more meat we eat, the sicker we get. Meat is poison to us. It's the primary reason we get heart disease, cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, and every other major degenerative disease. If eating meat were natural, it wouldn't destroy our health. Physical performance: People have much better endurance when they don't eat meat -- whether they're professional athletes or not. There are three types of animals Meat Eaters Plant Eaters Fruit Eaters Meat eaters have sharp teeth (Canine teeth) to pierce tough hide and to spear and tear flesh Plant and Fruit Eaters have Molars (flat, back teeth) for grinding their food. Humans have more Molar teeth however also have 4 sharp teeth’s. Hence god has given us the flexibility to have non vegetarian, however our body is designed to eat plants and fruits only. Human characteristics are in every way like the fruit eaters, very similar to the grass- eater, and very unlike the meat eaters. The human digestive system, tooth and jaw structure, and bodily functions are completely different from carnivorous animals. As in the case of the anthropoid ape, the human digestive system is twelve times the length of the body; our skin has millions of tiny pores to evaporate water and cool the body by sweating; we drink water by suction like all other vegetarian animals; our tooth and jaw structure is vegetarian; and our saliva is alkaline and contains ptyalin for predigestion of grains. Human beings clearly are not carnivores by physiology -- our anatomy and digestive system show that we must have evolved for millions of years living on fruits, nuts, grains, and vegetables. Furthermore, it is obvious that our natural instincts are non-carnivorous. Most people have other people kill their meat for them and would be sickened if they had to do the killing themselves. Instead of eating raw meat as all flesh-eating animals do, humans boil, bake, or fry it and disguise it with all kinds of sauces and spices so that it bears no resemblance to its raw state. One scientist explains it this way: "A cat will salivate with hungry desire at the smell of a piece of raw flesh but not at all at the smell of fruit. If man could delight in pouncing upon a bird, tear its still-living limbs apart with his teeth, and suck the warm blood, one might conclude that nature provided him with meat-eating instinct. On the other hand, a bunch of luscious grapes makes his mouth water, and even in the absence of hunger he will eat fruit because it tastes so good." Scientists and naturalists, including the great Charles Darwin who gave the theory of evolution, agree that early humans were fruit and vegetable eaters and that throughout history our anatomy has not changed. The great Swedish scientist von Linné states: "Man's structure, external and internal, compared with that of the other animals, shows that fruit and succulent vegetables constitute his natural food." It is human nature to want to feel that what we're doing is right, proper, and logical. When we're confronted with something that suggests that our current practices are not the best ones, it's uncomfortable. We can either consider that our choices may not have been the best ones, which is extremely disturbing, or we can reject that premise without truly considering it, so that we don't have to feel bad about our actions. That's the more comfortable approach. And we do this by searching our minds for any arguments we can for why the challenge must be wrong, to justify our current behavior. Conclusion: I am not saying you should not eat non vegetarian food; however it is recommended to consume less to have better health. In spirituality, it is recommended to not to have non vegetarian food, as it disturbs your digestive system and in turn spoils your spiritual activities like prayers, meditation etc.
How to go vegetarian? How to do this in a healthy way? I've heard of all the health benifits, and now with our global problems I feel that I can make a difference in the world, by changing my eating habits. I watched on Peta, on the website about animal cruelty and wow, it got to me. I've spent so many years eating meat..I don't know where to go from here.. I do enjoy soy, and tofu, and a lot of vegetarian food.
Inexpensive Beginners Vegetarian Market List Please? I am going vegetarian for health reasons and this is the one thing I know I can stick to to help me lose some major weight. Times are tough and I don't want to experiment with expensive food that will sit in my fridge. What is a good basic market list for a vegetarian? Thanks. And yes, I mean vegetarian not vegan. I will eat eggs and cheese.

Vegetarian eatery? Where is a good place to take a vegetarian to eat in a place like Jacksonville, Florida where there really isnt that many options specifically for vegetarians? There are health food stores and places to shop but is there really any place that you can go out on a date and not worry about whether or not your boyfriend/girlfriend can eat there?
Health Vegetarian diet????? Huge problem. Need to go on yeast -free diet. But, the problem is everytime I go on a diet I gain weight????? (I am fully aware this is not normal). The more junk I eat the more weight I lose. I can eat 6000 calories a day, and I will lose VISIBLE weight VERY QUICKLY. I am afraid if I go on the yeast-free diet, I will gain weight as I won't be able to eat the normal stuff I am used to. I realize for some reason, I don't react to food like most people, as the more I eat the more weight I lose.. Any suggestions as I really don't want to gain weight but definitely need to stop eating so much sugar and bread all the time. I am not a huge meat eater, but definitely not a vegetarian either. Any suggestions, that if I chose to go on this kind of diet, then how can I avoid gaining weight as I obviously won't be getting my normal calorie intake and I will end up gaining weight (happens everytime I try to watch what I eat). Currently 119, 5'7, but if I go on a diet, I'll be fat??
Suggestions for trying out being vegetarian? So... I just got back from a long trip and have no food in the house. I'm trying to eat healthier and lose a little weight, and I've been thinking of going vegetarian for various health/ethical reasons anyway. I wanted to try the lifestyle for a week and see how it goes. Any suggestions for recipes? I'm giving thumbs down to anyone NOT answering my question about RECIPES.
Becoming a vegetarian for health reasons...?? I weigh 140 pounds and I am 5'4 3/4'' - I would like to become a vegitarian for health reasons. Is that a good idea?? If it is, could someone give me a plan I could stick to, considering the rest of my family eats meat products daily and I also don't have much self disipline. I like all fruits except for figs&papaya's, and I like alll veggies, depending on how they are prepared. Oh yeah, I ADORE peanut butter. I also don't have any food allergies, so don't worry about what is put intp the plan. I hope that somebody can help me with this!! Thanks!
My Mom Temps Me With Food... And I Have A Few Health Questions? My mom always gets on me about how I should eat healthier, when really I think I'm the healthiest in the family, although I don't do sports but I work out on my own. So, I try to eat healthy. But whenever she goes to the store she always gets the most tempting foods, chips, cookies, cake, donuts... etc. Never ANY healthy food, maybe some bananas or apples if my brother asks, but whenever I ask she "forgets"... Bleh. So, can anyone help me with some techniques to resist foods like this? And also I'm 15, I am 6'0 and weigh 140 pounds and has a build. Is my weight good for my height and age? Also I'm a vegetarian, does this affect my health in a bad way because I'm not getting proteins or something like that? I'd like to make a comment about PETA, twiggy. Although I am a vegetarian, PETA is full of hypocrits. They kill 2/3 of the animals they "save" and they support radicals. The head of PETA, her name escapes me says "Sometimes the best way to save an animal is to end it's suffering" ^Now would someone in PETA agree with that? I don't think so. PETA is not my thing, I hate their guts. Also thanks for the hell everyone so far ;] I'll give these all a try. I'd like to make a comment about PETA, twiggy. Health benefits of being vegetarian? I am seriously considering cutting meat out of my diet. I have heard there are tremendous health benefits. Can someone clarify what these benefits are? Also, please no 'meat is murder!' because I do not feel that eating meat is morally bad, or that people shouldn't do it. I think that statement is an opinion, and an opinion only. I am only wondering about the health benefits. Also, what food could I include in my diet that would benefit my health? What are good substitutes for the nutrition we get out of meat? Oh - would cutting out meat from my diet help keep my weight under control too? Would I even lose weight? Thank you in advance for your help - I'd be really grateful!
A Question To My Fello Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs And Jains About The Vegetarian Diet??? I am a follower of sanatan Dharma (religions above). It is widely believed that these religions are ostensibly "vegetarian" religions. However many have disagreed about this, especially the case with Hinduism. They have argued that being a vegetarian is not a requirement for the Hindu faith. Can anyone unequivocally clarify??? EXACTLY WHERE the requisite for vegetarian food is??? I am a practicing Hindu but I still eat meat because of its health benefits. Vegetarian people tend to be shorter, smaller in stature and have the strength and courage of a woman :-) Please only Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs and Jains answer. Thanks sorry guys, I spelt "fellow" wrong. :-) Ram Raj, I fully understand and agree with what you are saying.....But then isn't it better to eat meat and drink 15 glasses of water daily, which is what I do. Water has the effect of purifying and cleaning the body, mind and soul. We have a shower to bathe our external body...with the same logic we should consume lots of water to bathe our internal body as well as to ensure mental and spiritual hygiene. I accept that eating meat may cause negative energies within us. But we can deal with that by water, not by relinquishing meat altogether. Sugar juices and soft drinks also have the same effect. So does party food like chana massala and papdi chat...but that is considered more acceptable to eat, despite the fact that it has the same effects as meat. Why? Aradhna, when I said that veggy guys have the courage of a woman, it was a light hearted joke...not to be offended by it.
SPELL GRAMMAR CHECK REVISE AND WiN TEN POINTS? Dear, mom as of September 15 2008 I would like to become a vegetarian. Leading health experts agree that going vegetarian is the single-best thing we can do for ourselves and our families. Healthy vegetarian diets support a lifetime of good health and provide protection against numerous diseases, including our country’s three biggest killers: heart disease, cancer, and strokes. The American Dietetic Association states that vegetarians have “lower rates of death from ischemic heart disease; … lower blood cholesterol levels, lower blood pressure, and lower rates of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and prostate and colon cancer” and that vegetarians are less likely than meat-eaters to be obese.1 Well-planned vegetarian diets provide us with all the nutrients that we need, minus all the saturated fat, cholesterol, and contaminants found in animal flesh, eggs, and dairy products. Now you might be thinking why would I want to be vegetarian when I don’t eat (some of) the vegetables you provide me with such as broclie and okra. As I told you before I like the taste of broclie when it is uncooked I do however don’t like okra but there are a lot of different vegetables I do enjoy such as tomatoes, celery, carrots, and cucumbers. As for fruits I enjoy Strawberries, banana, grape, peache, pear, pineapple, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, watermelon, cantalope, blueberry, raspberry, blackberry, and apples . You also might be thinking where would I get my source of protein ? While virtually all vegetarian foods contain some protein, soybeans deserve special mention. Soybeans contain all the essential amino acids and surpass all other plant foods in the amount of protein that they can deliver to humans. The human body is able to digest 92 percent of the protein found in meat and 91 percent of the protein found in soybeans.(6) The availability of many different and delicious soy products (e.g., tempeh, tofu, and soy-based varieties of hot dogs, burgers, and ice cream) in grocery and health-food stores suggests that the soybean, in its many forms, can accommodate a wide range of tastes. So basically I would be able to get all the protein I need. Right now I just want to stop eating animals meat I will still consume dairy products. So please read this and notify me back on what you think.

A group of 2 couples -- former co-workers, all retired now We've never been to New York City We all like Chinese, health foods and vegetarian food My husband wants to know if there are any good all-you-can eat places -- buffets, I guess that's what they are called Interested in museums and libraries Likes gadgets and electronics and music I like to bum around thrift stores -- are there good ones in NY City? Any good vegetarian versions of Caribbean dishes (using vegemeat is ok too)? My parents are from St. Vincent but I don't know that much about Caribbean food. My mother decided our family would become vegetarian when I was little, so I grew up eating tofu and other health-food type things. I am familiar with a few things, like plantain, cassava, pulao, roti, pone, sorrel (drink) and tropical fruits. I am ok at cooking Indian food, and I know Indian cuisine has strongly influenced the food my parents grew up with (also African, French, Spanish, and South American influences can be found). Anyway, I am going to visit my parents and I would like to cook a vegetarian Caribbean feast for them, including a drink, a dessert (or two) , one spicy main dish and one not-so-spicy main dish, and several sides. Particularly the kind of ingredients that they probably haven't eaten in years, that will remind them of childhood. I am willing to use vegemeat to substitute for meat, though I have never seen any vegegoat at the health store! Please share recipes/ideas.
Vegetarian mincemeat? Does anyone know where I can buy vegetarian mincemeat in the UK? I have tried the Health Food stores but no one seems to stock. I don't want the vegetarians in my family to miss out on the mince pies at Christmas.
